Amsterdam’s dark and scary history is not for the fainthearted!
If you have nerves of steel and a great sense of humor, the Amsterdam Dungeon is the place for you! You’ll come face to face with over 500 years of Amsterdam’s darkest history.
It may be hard to believe today, but the Dutch capital was not always a city of freedom and fun. Be prepared to discover some very unsavory secrets. We’re not proud of it, but during the Spanish Inquisition many an innocent soul was tortured here. Public executions attracted the crowds that might go to a music festival these days. Even the Golden Age had a very dark side. Hint: grave robbing was never more profitable.
No less than 10 great actors (plus the odd corpse … ) bring these scary true stories back to life. They revel in the gruesome details and make sure you are fully involved in the action. The Amsterdam Dungeon is a truly unique theatrical experience that lasts over an hour. And it’s one that may stay with you for the rest of your life.
As you move from one grisly scene to the next, you’ll never know what’s ahead of you. Will you want to laugh, cry – or scream? The place is amazingly multi-sensory – don’t forget to hold your nose at the autopsy! It also features grisly props, skin-crawling sound effects, and lighting so low, you might be tempted to feel your way round. Warning: we wouldn’t!
Survived? Recover from the experience at one of the many bars and restaurants nearby, many with sidewalk seating. Make the most of your trip by exploring the capital while you’re here. The Amsterdam Dungeon is located right near the best places in the city to go shopping. And it’s just a few minutes’ walk from cultural attractions such as Madame Tussaud’s, canal boat tours and major museums.
