Things to do in Gouda
First, head to the Market Square and Old City Hall at the heart of the city. The Gouda cheese market is open every Thursday morning from April to August in the square (excluding public holidays). Brilliant yellow and orange wheels of Gouda cheese arrive by wagon and merchants begin their trade as the scent of cheese fills the air. Inside the nearby Goudse Waag (the weigh house) you can learn the history of Gouda cheese at the Cheese and Crafts Museum (after all, it is one of the most popular cheeses in the world).
When you’ve had your fill of Gouda cheese, visit famous Sint Janskerk, a 15th century church with spectacular stained-glass windows. The church is also a popular attraction because of its length; at an impressive 123 meters long, it’s the longest in the Netherlands. Wander the charming streets and get a glimpse of daily life, or visit one of the many museums and historic buildings you’ll uncover along the way.
